Shaun Boyd Blog Post 1

Like many of you I happened to choose Mrs. Huffs English class blog.  As stated previously it is a blog directed at the students, who cosist of 9th - 12th grade.  There is a daily posting which we have all seen that consists of assignments for that day.  This blog "works" because it transfers accountibility from the teacher to the student.  The teacher has provided an outlet to the students that shows them what is covered during absences and such.  It also gives the teacher a defense against angry parents.  However, it also lets the parents be aprised of what is going on in the class room thus keeping them informed from sneaky kids who lie to thier parents (you know you all have done it from time to time as a student).  This is a great way to keep parent involvement up in addition to giving the student every opportunity to catch up, which is what teacher's are obligated to do now.

The second one I looked at was the 8th grade history blog.  This blog is about US History.  So in looking over this I will just say "wow".  It is full of information such as podcasts, text posts, and videos.  There is alot of work that goes into this.  I happend to watch a video of him and his classroom and you can really get a feel for how the students are reacting to the way he teaches.  This blog is for everyone and sets no parameters to learn, this is probably the most fascinating blog i have run across.  The students keep up with class, the parents keep up with what students are doing and then everyone else just gets well informed.

Indeed, Mrs. Huff's blog has been pretty popular! I am glad you brought up the liability issue. As teachers, we will be blamed for a great deal of things that are out of our control. It's great that Mrs. Huff has sort of shifted the responsibility back onto the students and parents by posting the classroom assignments, readings, notes, etc.

Regarding the 8th grade history blog, it appears that this teacher takes his job very seriously. He has left no stones unturned-incorporating podcasts, videos, etc. I am sure that his students are benefitting greatly from all of the creative teaching strategies he is employing in the classroom.

Shaun your investigation into the two blogs seems very interesting. I especially like the fact that the blog for Mrs. Huff's class can be used not only as a tool for the students and a means to keep up with all of their school work, but I also think it is great that the parents have access to it as well. I know that I would like that luxury as a parent myself. It seems that the sites are both controlled well and students know what is or is not appropriate. That is always very important when it comes to doing things through technology. Great Job

I looked at both the videos that you looked at I really like the ones that Mrs. Huff has because you do have the accountablity for the students and the parents feels like they are infromed on a nightly/daily basis which lends itself to more parent involvement. Of course I was more than impressed by the Mr. Langhorst's blog it took me forever looking through all the loads of information that he had. I think after looking thoroug the two I like a happy medium what do you think?

Good point about the website being a defense against angry parents. It also keeps the students accountable like you said. I think having a blog would help eliminate the need for makeup work and allow the students to take responsibility for what they missed. I also enjoyed the history blog you viewed! Great points about both!
