Creativity vs. Literacy

After viewing the video, my thoughts on the discussion prompt question are as follows:

Creativity is an important part of education. I am on the fence when it comes to creativity being “as important as literacy.” Literacy is the foundation of our society and is, in my opinion, the chief cornerstone of developed countries. However, I do believe that creativity is necessary for progressivism inside and outside of the classroom. Much of what we do today is based on creative, out-of-the-box thinking. Many of the inventions we enjoy today were found by accident. Thus, the nurturing of those students who have creative tendencies should not be neglected.

I also do not necessarily agree with teaching creativity (not all kids are programmed the same way) or giving it the same credence as literacy. As educators, we have taken a pledge to educate our pupils based on certain standards and with proven teaching strategies. Nevertheless, educators have a chief role in not stifling the creativity in our students. Instead, we should nudge those creative juices along. An effective teacher/school system is one that is able to embrace creativity while not leaving the most important (fundamental) works undone.

Tewanna, looking at your views about creativity in the classroom, for me, just further reinforces the notion of how different we all are. You seem like someone who is really structured and disciplined in what you do, something which is greatly valued in society today. But think about those children who don't have any interset or motiviation to do math or science or Englishm, even if their teachers only want to import that knowledge upon them to help them succeed in the future. I wonder, how do motivate students to partake in educating themselves if they have no interest in what is being taught? What do you think?

Tewaana, I enjoyed reading you response and see where your comming from when you say literacy is the basis for developed countries. But I personally believe that creativity is as much if not more important than literacy, becuase learning should be offered in a way that all students can shine in the way they learn.

I actually agree with you to some extent I do not feel that we incporated or structed just because we are saying that people need to be able to read. Every nation in the world whether they are "developed" or not boasts their literacy rate and many times is higher then ours. I just feel that without soon form of literacy you cannot be creative but of course that is where intergration comes in.

Tewanna, I really see how we struggle with this issue of literacy vs. creativity. Our nation promotes individuality and freedom, however we are also struggling to keep up within the world on intellectual and productive levels. We must have knowledge, however the way that we demonsrate that knowledge does not always have to be conventional. That is what determines the innovator from the rest of the intellectuals. Innovation cannot come without creativity.
